Italian Landscape Oil Painting by James Eadie-reid

1900 - 1920
Description

An interesting oil on artist board by the Scottish artist James Eadie-Reid 1867-1928. The painting depicts a view over one of the Italian lakes and is worked in purely horizontal tones of colour, Reid was a designer of stained glass and I think this has influenced this painting. It is a wonderful observation on light and its effects at sunset. The painting is in good professionally cleaned condition with the odd mark consistent with age. The work is not signed on the front but does retain a label for The London Salon exhibition of 1915 and indicates it may well have been exhibited in Paris as well in 1908. The London Salon was a progressive art group supported by Sickert, Pissaro and others. James Eadie-Reid was born in Dundee in 1856 and died in 1928 he was a designer associated with the Arts and Crafts movement and an artist with a particular interest in religious art. He was pupil of Patrick Geddes and exhibited at the Scottish Royal Academy. He moved to London and worked with Robert Ashbee at the influential Guild of Handicraft. He developed a strong following in stained glass design and religious painting for churches and was also an expert on early Italian Christian art. He worked in Paris before the great war and exhibited at the Société nationale des beaux-arts in 1913 and designed the stained-glass windows of the Protestant Church of Saint-Jean in Paris. This is an interesting and decorative work by the artist which must have been inspired by his time in Paris. The painting is mounted in the original gilt frame which has a great worn look. The whole is a wonderfully decorative work inspired by an Italian sunset.
