Victorian landscape painting frequently focused on romanticised rural scenery, atmospheric lighting, and detailed depictions of the British countryside.

Artists of this era typically utilised oil paints applied to stretched woven linen canvases, housed within heavily carved and gilded plaster-on-wood frames.

Authentication involves examining canvas weave characteristics, pigment analysis, stretcher frame construction, artist signatures, and the ageing of the oil paint layers under UV light.

Pairing a traditional gilt-framed canvas with minimalist contemporary furnishings creates a striking focal point that balances historical character with clean modern lines.

Keep paintings away from direct sunlight and high humidity, maintain stable indoor temperatures, and dust the surface gently with a soft, dry brush without using liquid cleaners.
