FAQs

Cold-painted bronze refers to items cast in bronze, patinated, and then hand-painted with layers of cold enamel paint that are not fired in a kiln. This technique reached the height of its popularity in Vienna, Austria, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

These figures were typically crafted using the lost-wax casting method for intricate detail, using a copper-alloy bronze base. The polychrome finish was applied using oil-based paints over a layer of cold enamel, requiring steady hand-painting by skilled artisans.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit characteristic chipping and wear to the original hand-painted cold enamel surface due to age, rather than modern synthetic finishes. Many genuine items also bear foundry marks, Bergman stamped urn symbols, or serial numbers cast into the underside.

Position the figurine on a stack of leather-bound books, a mantelpiece, or a dedicated desk space to introduce historical character and texture. Its metallic finish pairs well with natural wood surfaces, marble trays, and curated cabinet displays.

Dust the surface very gently with a soft dry brush or microfibre cloth, completely avoiding water, cleaning solutions, or chemical solvents which will strip the fragile cold-painted enamel. Keep the object away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent further paint flaking.
