FAQs

Late 19th-century landscape painting often focused on naturalistic depictions of rural scenery, riverbanks, and coastal areas, capturing atmospheric light conditions and everyday life with textured brushwork.

Artworks from this period typically utilised oil paint on stretched linen canvas, mounted within heavily ornamented, gesso-moulded wood frames finished with gold leaf or metallic gilt.

Authenticity is assessed through examining the canvas weave, craquelure in the oil paint layer, stretcher bar construction, artist signatures, and the condition of the original backing and gilt frame.

Placing an antique landscape painting on a neutral wall or paired with modern furnishings provides a focal point, grounding the space with historic texture and rich metallic framing.

Preserve oil paintings by maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, and dusting the frame and canvas gently with a dry, soft brush.
