Pocket barometers, often referred to as aneroid barometers, gained popularity in the mid-19th century as portable scientific instruments used by travellers, mountaineers, and sailors to measure atmospheric pressure and altitude.

These instruments typically feature a silver or nickel-plated brass case, a glass crystal lens protecting a graduated enamel or metal dial, and an internal evacuated metal capsule connected to a mechanical pointer system.

Authentic pieces generally display maker signatures, hallmark stamps on precious metal cases, delicate hand-graduated dials, and mechanical components such as compensated movements rather than modern electronic sensors.

As small decorative objects, they can be displayed on desks, inside glass cabinet displays, or mounted on stands to add a touch of historical character to study rooms and libraries.

Keep them away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and high humidity to prevent oxidation of the metal case and degradation of the internal mechanical linkage.
