Oil Painting by James Herbert Snell Rba Roi

19th century
Description

A fine oil on canvas by James Herbert Snell 1861-1935 depicting a continental scene with a girl sitting reading on a step. The work is beautifully observed, particularly the textures and light around the stone and plasterwork. The painting is in excellent condition and signed to the lower right J Herbert Snell. James Herbert Snell 1861-1935 RBA, ROI, was an English landscape painter. Snell studied art at Heatherleys, London, Paris and Amsterdam. This work is on a Parisian canvas and was probably created when he was in Paris. He was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists in 1890 where he exhibited 47 times and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1909 where he exhibited 118 times. He exhibited widely including 45 works at the Royal Academy, as well as at the Royal Cambrian Academy, Royal Hibernian Society, the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours, the Royal Scottish Academy, Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, and Manchester City Art Gallery. He won a gold medal at the Paris Salon in 1923. Snell was a frequent visitor to St.Ives in Cornwall including in 1909 when he was elected a member of the St Ives Arts Club. This piece is an unusual one for the artist as it is not truly a landscape work more of a genre scene, it is beautifully done and captures perfectly the warmth of a summer’s day on the continent. The painting is framed in the original frame which is in very good condition, it has however been overpainted gold at some point. The whole is a superb work by a great artist and is ready to hang. C.1890.
