Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

Victorian Japonisme furniture emerged in the late 19th century, heavily influenced by imported Japanese art and craftsmanship following the opening of Japanese trade. It typically features asymmetrical compositions, naturalistic motifs such as foliage and flowers, and dark carved wood finishes.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as oak, walnut, mahogany, or sometimes softer fruitwoods carved to mimic exotic timbers. Joinery often relied on traditional mortise and tenon techniques combined with hand-carved detailing.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting the hand-carved chisel marks, the natural ageing and patination of the timber, and construction methods such as hand-cut joints rather than modern mechanical fasteners. Makers marks, stamps, or labels from prominent retailers like Liberty & Co can also provide definitive attribution.

An antique carved table works well as an accent piece or plant stand in contemporary spaces, providing textural contrast against clean lines and neutral walls. Pairing it with minimalist decor highlights the intricate craftsmanship without cluttering the room.

Preservation involves keeping wooden furniture away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the timber from drying out and splitting. Regular dusting with a dry, soft cloth and occasional application of appropriate natural beeswax help maintain the surface finish without causing damage.
