Fine Japanese Taisho/Showa (1920-30s) Bronze Horse by Ikeda Yuhachi (1886-1963), a master animal sculptor in wood and bronze. An outstanding piece that depicts a stallion with a dignified presence, with a robust body, centred around its supple hind legs. Signed at the base. 23cm high x 27cm wide x 7.5cm deep, weight 2.6kg.

Very good condition and patina.

Ikeda Yuhachi was born on Shikoku Island in 1886. He studied at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts as a student of Fumio Asakura and received a bronze medal at the Tokyo Industrial Exposition in 1907. He exhibited regularly in the Bunten Exhibition – where his horse bronze won a first prize in 1909 – and was a judge for the Teiten Exhibition in 1920. His notable bronze works include Statue of Prince Yasuhiko of Asaka on Horseback and Pilgrimage to Shinzan Shrine.
