Striking Japanese Meiji (early 20thC) bronze okimono of Prince Shotoku wearing an elaborate robe and holding prayer beads. Black patination. A fine cast with lovely detail, signed on the side. 35.5cm wide x 25cm deep x 24cm high, weight 4kg.
Superb original condition and nice patina.
Prince Shotoku (574-622) was an influential leader in seventh-century Japan, popularly credited with achievements from establishing courtly ranks and a constitution to encouraging the spread of Buddhism and sending envoys to China.
