Oil Painting of Easedale Tarn by James Henry Crossland

19th century
Description

A fine landscape oil on board depicting Easedale Tarn in the Lake District by James Henry Crossland 1852-1939. A fine example of the work of this specialist in depicting the landscapes of the Lake District. The scene is cast across the lake towards the mountains in the distance holding the mist and clouds as the sun tries to break through. The painting is in good condition and is signed J.H.Crossland to the lower left. James Henry Crossland (1852-1939) was primarily a landscape painter in oils. He was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, the son of a Vicar, but moved to Derbyshire with his family and then to the Lake District, where he died at Ambleside in Cumbria in 1939. He painted some Scottish landscapes, but mostly worked in the Lake District and was a founder Member of the Lake Artists' Society in 1904. He exhibited at Suffolk Street, the Royal Academy, the Royal Cambrian Academy, and every other major gallery. There are 18 of his paintings in the National Collection at various institutions mainly in the Lake District. This is a fine example of his work and is framed in the original gilt frame. C.1890.
