The stick barometer was developed in the late 17th century following Evangelista Torricellis invention of the mercury barometer. By the Georgian era, they became refined scientific instruments housed in decorative wooden cases for domestic use.

Traditional stick barometers were typically constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak for the trunk and case, featuring hand-carved pediments, brass fittings, and hand-engraved silvered brass dials.

Authentic period barometers feature original mercury tubes, hand-graduated ivory or silvered brass scales, period-appropriate timber patination, and traditional joinery methods consistent with the 18th or 19th centuries.

An antique barometer can be mounted on a prominent wall in a study or hallway as a focal point, pairing traditional scientific craftsmanship with contemporary minimalist surroundings for a sophisticated textural contrast.

Barometers should be mounted away from direct sunlight and strong heat sources to prevent timber warping. When moving, the barometer must be tilted carefully to secure the mercury column and prevent damage to the glass tube.
