Mixed media sculptures combining carved alabaster and cast bronze gained significant popularity in Europe during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly within Italian and French ateliers that catered to the demand for exotic, orientalist subjects.

These sculptures typically utilise the lost-wax casting method for the bronze elements, producing fine surface detail, combined with hand-carved natural alabaster or marble for the figural components, often mounted on a sturdy stone or marble base.

Authenticity is generally determined by inspecting the quality of the bronze chasing, the natural mineral grain and translucency of the alabaster, and the presence of period foundry marks, artist signatures, or correct patination consistent with the early 20th century.

Such focal objects work effectively when displayed on a heavy mahogany mantelpiece, an executive desk, or a prominent side table where the contrasting dark metal and pale stone can be appreciated without visual clutter.

Bronze requires periodic dusting with a soft microfibre cloth and occasional application of microcrystalline wax to protect the patina, while alabaster must be kept away from moisture and direct water contact, as it is a soft, water-soluble stone.
