Abstract Oil Painting of London by Arthur Bell Foster

A fine and interesting oil on canvas depicting a view of London and the Thames in an abstract manner, by Arthur Bell Foster 1900-1979. The painting is a wonderful abstract impression of London and the Thames with the buildings reflected in water. The technique focuses entirely on sunset colours and the shapes of the industrial city taken back to the simplest form. The work is an interesting and unusual piece for this artist who was mostly more traditional in style and is signed to the lower left. Arthur Bell Foster 1900-1979 was a landscape painter, designer, illustrator and teacher. He studied at the Sheffield School of Art 1924-29 and settled in Birmingham. He exhibited in the mid twentieth century at the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Institute of painters in water colours, as well as in Birmingham. This work is a great example of his more abstract work and is in excellent condition. Interestingly the reverse of the canvas has another painting by the artist and shows it was reused, this is not unusual. The painting is mounted in the original fine quality painted frame which also retains an exhibition label on the reverse. The whole is a wonderfully decorative work which is ready to hang. C.1930.
