Nineteenth-century European painting often focused on realistic depictions of landscapes, seascapes, and daily life, utilising rich colour palettes and dramatic play of light and shadow.

These works typically utilised woven linen or cotton canvas stretched over wooden stretcher bars, painted with oil-based pigments, and housed in hand-carved or moulded wooden frames.

Authentic oil paintings exhibit raised brushstrokes, craquelure in the varnish layer under magnification, and are executed on genuine woven canvas rather than printed paper or textured synthetic boards.

Pairing a heavy wooden-framed historical artwork with minimalist modern decor creates a striking focal point, grounding the space through a juxtaposition of historical depth and clean lines.

Keep paintings away from direct sunlight and dramatic humidity fluctuations, and gently dust the canvas and frame periodically with a soft, dry, lint-free brush.
