Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late 19th century, Western fascination with Asian craft led to the popularity of Anglo-Japanese and Meiji period furniture. Craftsmen created delicate wooden stands decorated with multi-layered urushi lacquer and hand-painted gilt decoration, specifically designed to display potted plants, ceramics, and bronzes.

These stands were typically constructed from native hardwoods or softwoods coated in multiple thin layers of natural urushi tree resin lacquer. Decorative motifs were applied using gold and silver powders (maki-e) or hand-painted gilding, occasionally accented with carved aprons or inlaid mother-of-pearl.

Authentic period pieces display fine hand-painted details, subtle surface craquelure, and traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery beneath the lacquer finish. Genuine historical lacquer exhibits depth and smoothness, unlike modern synthetic varnishes, and often displays natural age-related wear to high-touch areas.

Position the stand as an accent piece in a hallway, drawing room, or alcove to elevate a contemporary ceramic vase, sculpture, or indoor plant. The dark lacquered surface and gold detailing contrast effectively against neutral walls and modern minimalist furniture.

Keep lacquered furniture out of direct sunlight and away from central heating sources to prevent wood movement and finish degradation. Dust gently with a dry microfibre cloth, and avoid using water, chemical cleaners, or commercial furniture polishes.
