It’s serene with the silence only broken by the rolling of waves lapping over shingle. Kronberg, better known as ‘Elsinore’ from Shakespeare's Hamlet, cuts a striking figure through the haze of morning.
During the 1920s and 1930s, Neumann visited here often. Perching his easel on the beach to capture this iconic sight in various conditions. He cherished the coastline of north Zealand and it’s easy to see why. Born in Copenhagen, he initially worked as a mill builder like his father, while honing his drawing skills in his spare time. But soon, under the guidance of his uncle, the distinguished maritime painter, Carl Neumann (1833-1891), he pursued his artistic endeavours.
His early works, primarily those painted during the late 19th century, often capture dramatic vignettes from Denmark’s naval history. Numerous frigates, pounded by cannons, sway in squally conditions. But as he matured, his seascapes became less theatrical with greater emphasis on naturalism. He worked at a fascinating time of technological advancements and frequently included both sailboats and steamers in the same view.
He’s represented at Vejle Art Museum.
Signed in the lower right and held within a gilt frame.

Condition: Cleaned. Revarnished. Faint stretcher marks. Areas of fine and settled craquelure, as you would expect. The paint layer is stable. Frame in good condition with minor age-related wear.
