Fine Regency Portrait of a Gentleman

A fine quality oil on canvas portrait of a gentleman. The work is done to a very high standard and in particular captures the face beautifully. The gentleman is dressed very formally in black, with his hand resting on books, which may well indicate that he is a professional man such as a lawyer or politician. The style of the portrait is similar to that of Sir Thomas Lawrence and his paintings of politicians. The work is in good untouched condition. The frame is most likely the original and of a very good quality but has been over painted gold at some point, however it still has a great period look. The whole is a good example of Regency period portraiture with a huge amount of period decorative appeal. C.1820.
