This Post-Impressionist landscape watercolour painting dates from 1920 and depicts an expansive pale blue cloudscape above a low Cambridgeshire horizon. Signed in pencil by David Muirhead, the artwork is executed on paper using layered colour washes and sits within a glazed mount enclosed by a decorative gold leaf wooden frame featuring simple moulded edges. The painting measures 51 cm high, 61.5 cm wide, and 2 cm deep. Suitable for placement in a traditional English country house interior, this piece hangs effectively on a wall above a sideboard in a dining room or living area. The neutral mount board surrounding the artwork complements the pale blue tones of the sky while the slim gilded frame provides a finished presentation ready for display.

FAQs

British watercolour painting gained prominence in the 18th and early 20th centuries, defined by artists capturing light, weather, and topography through layered washes of pigment on paper.

These works typically feature water-soluble pigments applied to heavy cotton rag paper, set beneath protective glass with acid-free mounting boards and housed in carved wooden or gilded frames.

Authentic pieces often feature artist signatures or dates in pencil or fine paint, natural tonal aging on the paper stock, and period-correct framing techniques such as original backing paper or label remnants.

Display the framed piece above a wooden sideboard or integrate it into an eclectic gallery wall with contrasting brass or minimalist black frames to balance traditional and contemporary aesthetics.

Display watercolours away from direct sunlight and high-humidity areas to prevent fading and paper foxing, using UV-filtering glass and archival mount boards where possible.
