Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 1910 Continental washstand chest follows a 19th-century French Chateau style, fashioned in honey brown walnut with a white marble slab top and brass hardware. The bow front houses an arrangement of three drawers fitted with black turned knobs, alongside a single side cupboard door embellished with a geometric parquetry panel inlay and a keyhole escutcheon. Mouldings frame the drawer fronts and cupboard door, while the piece displays surface marks and scuffs commensurate with age and use, veneer losses to the plinth base at the sides, and marks and nibbles to the marble top. Measuring 76 cm high, 95 cm wide, and 65 cm deep, this washstand chest fits well in a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway as a practical surface for displaying decorative items, holding everyday accessories, or storing linens.

FAQs

Originally designed in the 18th and 19th centuries, marble top washstands served as functional bedroom furniture for personal hygiene before modern indoor plumbing. The marble surface protected the wooden frame from water spills and hot ceramic pitchers.

These pieces were commonly crafted from hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, oak, or fruitwood, paired with solid marble slabs. Fine craftsmanship often included hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, parquetry or marquetry veneers, and turned wooden or brass drawer knobs.

Authentic antique examples feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joinery, original brass escutcheons, and signs of natural age on the wood and marble underside. Hand-cut veneers, irregular drawer bottoms, and traditional mortise and tenon framing further confirm historical origin.

An antique washstand works exceptionally well converted into a bespoke bathroom vanity or repurposed as a hallway side cabinet. It can also function as a unique drinks cabinet or statement bedside storage piece in contemporary settings.

Clean the marble top using a pH-neutral cleaner or mild soap solution, wiping spills immediately to prevent staining on porous stone. The timber base requires periodic dusting and gentle polishing with natural beeswax to maintain its natural finish.
