FAQs

Early 20th-century watercolour painting is characterised by a shift towards looser brushwork, expressive colour palettes, and a focus on domestic still life and botanical subjects, moving away from rigid Victorian academic styles.

Traditional pieces were typically created using high-rag watercolour paper, gum arabic-based pigments, and fine-haired sable brushes, often framed behind glass with acidic backing boards.

Authenticity is determined by examining paper ageing, hand-mixed pigment characteristics, visible artist signatures, plate marks, and period-appropriate framing materials rather than modern reproductions.

An antique floral painting adds traditional character and warmth when hung against neutral walls, paired with minimalist frames to bridge historic charm with modern aesthetics.

Watercolours should be displayed away from direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading and housed in UV-protective glass with acid-free mounts to protect the delicate paper from degradation.
