Following in the footsteps of Ciceri, he undertook several stays in Germany, where he painted architectural views. He also traveled throughout France, painting monuments and genre scenes.
Our little angler was painted on one of Mathieu's excursions into the French countryside. It is a peaceful, light flooded scene, clearly painted en plein air. We can sense the artist's appreciation for nature and for the beauty of the day.
Works by Mathieu are today in the collections of the National Library and the Museum of the Army in Paris, the Fine Arts Museums of Dijon and Reims, and in the museums of Langes, Bourg en Bresse and Laon.
Our oil on canvas measures 24 x 33 and is signed at the lower left. With stable craquelure throughout, the work dates circa from the 1840s. The overall size including a Louis XV style frame is 34 x 41 cm.
