Early 19th-century British School, Portrait of a Regency Gentleman - Antique Oil Painting

19th century
Description

This early 19th-century British oil painting depicts a sturdy country gentleman wearing a black coat, white shirt with an upstanding collar, and a white cravat.

He’s dressed according to the rather dapper fashions of the Regency period when men embraced their romantic sensibilities. Gone were the constraints of neo-classicism, gentlemen carried themselves with charisma and verve. It was a time of William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Lord Byron. The Industrial Revolution was tempered by sweet expressive verse. Young couples exchanged letters gushing with sentiment.

Portraits were hung in country manor houses across the land with both Sir Thomas Lawrence PRA (1769-1830) and Sir William Beechey RA (1753-1839) well established. A portrait spoke volumes, not only aesthetically, but also a deeper level regarding a sitter's character and spirit.

Held in a later frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas

Overall size: 23” x 26½” / 58cm x 67cm

Year of creation: c. 1815

Provenance: Private collection, UK.

Condition: Assessed and left predominantly as found for aesthetic effect. Cleaned. Canvas relined. Fine and settled craquelure, as you would expect. The paint layer is stable. Minor scuffs. Discoloured varnish.

Our reference: BRV1621
