British landscape watercolour painting gained prominence during the 18th and 19th centuries, evolving from topographical recording to an expressive fine art medium celebrated for its luminous transparency and depiction of atmospheric light.

Traditional watercolours were typically created using gum arabic-based pigments applied to heavyweight handmade rag paper or watercolour board, often using hog-bristle and sable hair brushes.

Authentication involves examining paper watermarks, the composition of early pigment types under magnification, characteristic artist signatures or monograms, and the presence of period framing and backing materials.

An antique watercolour brings organic texture and historical depth to contemporary spaces, working particularly well when paired with minimalist frames and neutral walls to allow the subtle tones to take centre stage.

Antique watercolours should be framed using acid-free mounting materials and displayed away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent paper degradation and pigment fading.
