19th-century French School, Chevreuils En Forêt - Antique Oil Painting

19th century
Description

This charming late 19th-century French School oil painting depicts a forest view with deer.

Stylistically, it fits with the approach taken by the Barbizon school of artists who were active between 1830-1870. These were some of the first to truly embrace painting outdoors and they’re seen as a precursor to the French impressionists.

Many of their works were created in the forest of Fontainebleau near the village of Barbizon. The composition is particularly reminiscent of those by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796-1875), so perhaps the artist was a follower.

Signed illegibly in the lower left and held within a gilt frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas

Overall size: 16” x 12½” / 41cm x 32cm

Year of creation: c. 1880

Labels & Inscriptions: Exhibition label on reverse.

Provenance: Private collection, France / Private collection, England.

Condition: Assessed and approved by our conservator. One old patch on the reverse.
