Gents 1930s Pierce Mono-pusher Chronograph

Gents 1930s Pierce mono-pusher chronograph wrist watch with snail shell telemetric dial.

The watch has a Pierce 17 jewel hand-winding movement which is working nicely.

The watch measures 33mm diameter excluding the winding crown, buttons and lugs. The case has a nickel bezel (which was probably chrome plated originally), chrome plated centre and a stainless steel case back. The case is in good condition, just general light marking but nothing too serious.

The back of the watch is stamped Brevete SGDG, a French type of patent that ceased to exist in 1968. The name was a common abbreviation for "Breveté Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement”.

The lens is in good condition, just a couple of light marks.

The signed dial is in its original finish with both a telemeter scale and a tachymeter scale.

The snail shell telemeter scale measures the distance between the watch wearer and the event which has been seen and heard. It was often used to calculate when artillery fired, eg, when you saw the light of the shot of the artillery, you would push the start button and push the stop button when the thunder was heard. The number shown in the scale refers to the distance.

The tachymeter scale measures how fast an object is moving. The scale starts at 500 and ends at 60. To calculate speed, a point is marked and the button is pushed to start the function. After the object has moved for one mile, the button is pushed again to stop. The number indicated by the hand shows the speed of the object.

Some of the detailing is quite faded on the dial but still easy to read the time.

The hands are the originals but the infill has been removed over the years.

A later leather strap has been fitted.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.
