C19th Large Carved Hardwood Figure of a Monkey

Description

Magnificent C19th large carved hardwood figure of a monkey; with exceptional naturalistic carving; his finely carved head with a great belligerent expression having polychrome eyes, open mouthed showing his polychrome teeth and tongue. Sat upright with his legs crossed, one hand on his knee, the other holding his wrapped around tail. Raised on a carved scrolled rockwork base. The whole sculpture naturalistically carved throughout making him freestanding.

Probably Indian, circa 1880

Very good original condition with a lovely rich colour and patina.
