This nineteenth-century sculpture depicts Saint Bernadette kneeling in prayer before the Virgin Mary, capturing the traditional religious subject in a Gothic Revival style. The piece is cast from metal with a bright gold-coloured gilt finish, creating a striking metallic sheen across the figures and base. The upper section shows the standing robed figure of the Virgin Mary alongside the smaller kneeling figure of Bernadette on an elevated mound. Below them sits an elaborate architectural plinth featuring raised relief decorations of churches, Gothic pointed arches, and slender columns. The entire structure stands securely upon four ornate scroll feet that lift the base slightly off the surface. Signs of age appear as minor surface wear across the metallic finish. It measures 30 cm high, 10 cm wide, and 10 cm deep. Today, this religious souvenir functions as a decorative tabletop display piece, suited for placement on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or devotional shelf within a traditional interior setting.

FAQs

Sculptures depicting Saint Bernadette kneeling before the Virgin Mary commemorate the 1858 apparitions in Lourdes, France. These devotional pieces became popular across Western Europe during the late 19th century, coinciding with the Gothic Revival movement in ecclesiastical art.

19th-century devotional statues were commonly cast in bronze, brass, or spelter (a zinc alloy) before a gilded finish or ormolu coating was applied. The bases were frequently cast with architectural mouldings, tracery, and Gothic arch details.

Authentic period pieces display crisp casting detail alongside natural age-related surface wear, particularly on high points and decorative bases. Recessed areas of the gilding typically show accumulated dust or subtle dark patination rather than uniform bright polish.

A gilded devotional statue functions well as a focal decorative object on a mantelpiece, sideboard top, or within a dark wood bookshelf display. Positioning the piece against dark timber panelling or neutral background walls highlights the metallic detail.

Maintain the finish by dusting gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid using liquid polishes, solvents, or abrasive cleaners, as these can strip the original gilding and damage the historic surface patina.
