Pair of 19th Century Oil Paintings of Horses by Henry Frederick Lucas-lucas (C.1848-1943)

Description

Priced for the pair. A pair of paintings of horses in a stable, named 'Swiss Boy' and 'Stirling Wisdom'. Both signed and dated 1912 (lower right) and inscribed with the horse's name (lower left). The reverse of 'Stirling Wisdom' inscribed, 'Painted by H.F. Lucas Lucas, Rugby' and dated 'May 1912', and 'Swiss Boy' inscribed 'Painted by H.F. Lucas Lucas, Rugby' and dated 'January 1912'.

Both in natural wooden frames with a metal plaque bearing the horses' names.

Provenance:

Lord St. Helens and Sir William FitzHerbert The Collections of a Diplomat and a Courtier' sale, Christie's London, January 22, 2009, lot 639

Henry Frederick Lucas-Lucas (c.1848-1943) was born in Louth in Lincolnshire. In 1878 he moved to Rugby where he worked throughout his life, painting hunting scenes (especially of the Pytchley), racehorses, hunters and polo ponies. Earl Beatty was one of his main patrons. Several of his works were published as prints, with the best known one being 'Putting in the terriers', 1894. He normally signed both the front and reverse of his work.
