Eighteenth-century French portraiture is characterised by a focus on realism, soft lighting, and detailed representation of period attire, often reflecting the social standing of the sitter.

These works typically utilised oil paint on stretched canvas, framed in carved, gilded wood mouldings featuring intricate decorative motifs such as scrolling foliage.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the canvas weave, stretcher bar construction, pigment composition, craquelure patterns, and the age-related oxidisation of the varnish.

Hanging an antique portrait as a focal point on a neutral wall creates a striking juxtaposition, blending historical depth with contemporary minimalism.

Preservation requires stable indoor humidity levels, avoidance of direct sunlight to prevent fading, and periodic cleaning by a professional art conservator.
