A 19th century oil on canvas depicting a man leaning against a pillar before a leaded window with a flagon at his feet.
The subject looks melancholic, holding his hat to his chest with slumped shoulders and a somewhat defeated standing pose. The leaded window, gothic archway and light streaming from a source to the right indicating a larger window suggests the setting may be within a church.
The work has a some craquelure and high gloss varnish finish. The paint is stable throughout. The work is housed in a period gilt frame. Illegible chalk inscription to the stretcher verso. Chalk inscription of ''Loveday'' to the frame verso.
