Roses: Fauve Avant Garde Floral Still Life, 1910 Luminous Oil on Canvas

1900 - 1920
Description

An outrageously beautiful and modern painting of roses by Georges Chénard-Huché. I sometimes forget just how avant-garde some of the art produced in the first decade of the 20th Century was - and here is a timely reminder. With luminous colours and strong lines, this work has a hint of van Gogh and imbues post impressionism with a fauve touch.

George Chénard Huché had studied with the academic master Fernand Cormon and made his début at the Paris Salon in 1887. From 1901, showed his work at the more modern Salon of Independent Artists and the Salon d'Automne from 1901. In 1908, he had his first solo show had solo at the mythical Bernheim-Jeune Gallery, who at the time were representing Bonnard, Vuillard, Cézanne, Seurat, Matisse, Modigliani and Utrillo.

Chénard-Huché also participated in international exhibitions in Ghent, Buenos Aires, Munich, Zurich and Stockholm. Several of his paintings were acquired by the French State.

Works by the artist are now in the Musée d'Orsay (no less!), the Musée de Luxembourg, the Parisian Musée Carnavalet and the regional museums of Toulon, Dreux and Morlaix.

Our wonderful floral still life measures 55 x 46 cm. It is signed and dated 1910 at the lower right. The overall size in a hand carved and patinated wooden frame is 74 x 65 cm.
