A Fine 17th Century Charles II Olive Oyster Chest, Circa 1680 England

17th century
Description

The cross-grain ovolo moulded top is veneered in well-chosen olive oysters laid in geometric patterns incorporating a large central floral motif, roundels, corner arc quadrants and a trefoil to each end, all outlined in holly stringing and set with bookmatched oysters.

Similarly, the banded sides are veneered in oysters and holly inlaid to the centre with trefoil motifs set within a large roundel of oysters banded in holly.

Divided by cross-grain D-mouldings, the two short over three long oak-lined crossbanded graduating drawers are decorated with book-matched olive oysters. Raised on solid ash bun feet.

This remarkable chest is likely to be symbolic, depicting a large floral motif and trefoils to the top and quatrefoils to the sides, this possibly representing creation, the holly trinity and good fortune.

The chest is incredibly well proportioned, visually beautiful, unusual and of very good colour and patination.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
