How do I date an oak chest of drawers?

Dating relies on examining the construction methods, such as hand-cut dovetails on the drawer sides and the type of secondary wood used inside. Earlier pieces from the 18th century often feature pegged frames and uneven plank widths. Hardware placement and lock mechanisms also provide clues, as hand-forged iron and specific brass handle styles correspond to distinct stylistic periods like Georgian or Edwardian eras.

What is the difference between a tallboy and a standard chest?

A standard chest of drawers sits at waist or chest height, designed primarily for easy surface access and folding clothes. A tallboy builds upward, stacking additional drawer tiers to maximise vertical capacity. This vertical format offers significantly more storage while taking up less horizontal floor space in smaller rooms.

How should I care for antique walnut and mahogany?

Protect the wood by keeping pieces away from direct sunlight and sudden temperature shifts that can cause timber to split or veneer to lift. Dust regularly with a dry, soft cloth rather than using silicone sprays. Applying a traditional beeswax polish occasionally helps nourish the grain and maintain the natural patina built up over centuries of use.

Can I use a small chest as a bedside table?

Compact chests and miniature furniture make excellent bedside tables by offering enclosed storage alongside a surface for a lamp and books. Measuring the height of your mattress relative to the chest ensures comfortable reach. Pairing period wooden drawers with contemporary bedroom decor adds warmth and textual contrast to the sleeping space.
