How were antique coffers used originally?

These robust chests served primarily to secure valuables, household linen, and important documents against dampness and theft in homes and travels. Over centuries, their functions shifted from sacred church and municipal storage to domestic blanket boxes and military transport containers.

What woods are most common?

Pine and oak appear frequently in British domestic blanket boxes and carved coffers, offering local durability and sturdy everyday utility. Exotic timbers like camphor wood, teak, and padouk emerge in travel trunks and trade chests due to their natural insect-resistant properties.

How do I date a wooden trunk?

Examination of construction methods, such as hand-cut dovetails, forged iron strapwork, and timber types, reveals the period of manufacture. Hardware styles, including brass campaign handles and decorative studwork, also provide reliable clues to the decade or century.

Are camphor wood chests safe for woollens?

Camphor wood naturally emits aromatic oils that repel moths and insects, making these historic chests ideal for protecting blankets and wool. Many vintage and antique examples retain this characteristic scent after decades of service in homes and travel.
