How do I identify an Art Deco lounge chair?

Art Deco lounge chairs typically present clean geometric lines, streamlined silhouettes, and smooth polished wooden or leather surfaces originating predominantly from the 1930s. They often avoid ornate carving in favour of bold, functional curves. Club chairs and matching suite pieces from this era prioritise substantial padding and low, deep proportions designed entirely around comfortable lounging.

What defines a Howard style armchair?

A Howard style armchair is characterised by deeply comfortable proportions, low-set turned wooden legs on castors, and generous padded armrests. They evoke the classic English country house aesthetic. These chairs are built for relaxation, often featuring feather-filled cushions and supportive sprung backs that make them enduringly popular for living spaces.

Are daybeds considered lounge chairs?

Daybeds share close historical connections with lounge chairs, often appearing alongside armchairs within larger seating suites and drawing rooms. They provide extended surfaces for reclining rather than upright sitting. Nineteenth-century examples frequently incorporate decorative wooden frames, bolster pillows, and columnar legs that match the stylistic vocabulary of contemporary armchairs.

How should I care for antique leather upholstery?

Antique leather upholstery requires gentle cleaning using specialised conditioners to maintain flexibility and prevent the natural material from drying out over time. Avoiding direct sunlight helps preserve the rich colour and finish. Regular dusting and careful handling of the wooden framework will keep vintage club chairs and library armchairs in sound condition for daily use.
