How do I wear a watch chain?

Thread the T-bar through the central buttonhole of a waistcoat and drape the chain across the front, securing the pocket watch in the lower pocket. Alternatively, double albert chains loop through two buttonholes with the fob suspended centrally. Single chains allow the watch to sit in one pocket while the fob hangs independently, mirroring historical gentlemanly dress customs from the Edwardian era.

What did sovereign cases hold?

Sovereign cases were manufactured to safely carry British gold sovereign and half-sovereign coins used for everyday currency during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The spring-loaded interior kept the coins firmly in place until needed. People attached these small cases to their watch chains for quick access while travelling or conducting business.

How do I read silver hallmarks?

British hallmarks typically consist of a maker's mark, a standard purity mark such as the lion passant for sterling silver, and an assay office town mark like the anchor for Birmingham or leopard's head for London. A distinct date letter follows to identify the exact year of assay. Reference charts help match these stamped symbols to specific decades, enabling accurate dating of pieces from the Victorian and Georgian periods.

What were fob medals awarded for?

Medallion fobs were frequently presented for sporting triumphs in cricket, football, and athletics, or to mark memberships in societies such as the Oddfellows. Engravings on the reverse often record the recipient's name and the specific competition date. These pieces served as tangible trophies that owners proudly displayed alongside their pocket watch chains.

How do I clean sterling silver fobs?

Use a soft microfiber cloth with a mild silver cleaning solution to remove tarnish while preserving the original antique patina in recessed engravings. Avoid abrasive pastes that can wear away thin hallmark stamps or fine surface detail. Store pieces in dry conditions away from direct sunlight and moisture to slow down future tarnishing processes.
