How do I clean a vintage oak bookshelf?

Dust the timber regularly with a soft, dry cloth to prevent dirt accumulation in the grain. Avoid using harsh chemical sprays or silicone polishes, which can damage the aged finish over time.

Are the shelves adjustable?

Many Edwardian and later examples incorporate adjustable shelf mechanisms to accommodate different book sizes. Simpler Victorian and Arts and Crafts versions often feature fixed shelving secured directly into the side panels.

Where should I place my bookcase?

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources such as radiators and fireplaces to prevent the wood from drying out and splitting. Positioning the unit against an interior wall protects it from dampness and extreme temperature fluctuations.

How do I identify an Arts and Crafts bookcase?

Look for unpretentious construction, visible tenon joints, and a focus on the natural texture of the oak. These pieces typically eschew elaborate ornamentation in favour of honest utility and robust proportions.
