What is a writing table?

A writing table is a freestanding desk built primarily for correspondence and light paperwork, typically featuring one or more drawers beneath a flat top. Unlike heavier partner desks, these pieces remain relatively light and feature finished backs so they can sit in the middle of a room.

How do I date a mahogany table?

Dating relies on examining construction methods, timber choice, and hardware styles associated with periods like the Victorian era or Edwardian period. Revival pieces often combine older stylistic cues with manufacturing techniques specific to the early twentieth century. Changes in drawer linings, screw types, and secondary woods help clarify the exact decade of manufacture.

Can I use these daily?

These tables were built for daily clerical work and easily adapt to modern laptop use and writing tasks. Their solid timber construction provides the stability needed for regular workspace demands. Maintaining a stable room humidity helps protect the polished mahogany and inset leather surfaces from excessive drying.

What is Edwardian inlay?

Edwardian inlay refers to decorative woodwork popular during the early twentieth century, utilising contrasting lighter woods embedded into mahogany surfaces. This technique adds refined geometric or floral borders to drawer fronts and tabletops. The precision of the inlay work often indicates the skill level of the original workshop.
