How do I identify an Edwardian lamp table?

Edwardian lamp tables usually date from around 1900 to 1910 and frequently display lighter decorative touches like satinwood or boxwood inlay. They often take circular, oval, or octagonal forms influenced by earlier Georgian or Sheraton aesthetics. Examine the underside and interior timber for signs of period manufacturing methods, such as hand-cut components and lighter secondary woods beneath the polished mahogany surface.

What is the difference between a wine table and a lamp table?

Wine tables traditionally feature a small circular top on a turned tripod pedestal designed originally to hold a single glass or bottle. Lamp tables offer slightly broader surfaces intended to support lighting fixtures or decorative items. In modern usage, the terms overlap considerably, and many small occasional tables serve both functions interchangeably depending on their height and surface area.

How do I care for a mahogany table?

Protect the wax finish by avoiding direct sunlight and excessive moisture, using coasters beneath drinks and lamps. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth preserves the lustre of the timber. Applying a traditional beeswax polish occasionally helps nourish the mahogany and maintains the rich depth of colour without building up heavy chemical residue.

Are these tables suitable for small spaces?

Their compact footprints make these tables ideal for placing beside seating or beds where floor space is limited. Nesting configurations and slim tripod bases offer maximum surface utility with minimal obstruction. Cabinets and bedside chests also provide enclosed storage within a modest footprint, helping to keep smaller rooms tidy.
