Can I use these jugs for liquids?

Most antique and vintage jugs function primarily as decorative objects due to the age of the ceramic body and glaze. Hairline cracks or historical repairs can compromise watertight integrity. Displaying them on shelves or tables preserves their condition without risking structural damage from moisture. If used for fresh flowers, placing a small glass container inside prevents water from touching the antique interior.

How do I identify a nineteenth-century piece?

Nineteenth-century examples often display characteristic Sunderland pink splash effects, maritime themes, or transfer-printed inscriptions. The weight and thickness of the earthenware body usually feel heavier than later twentieth-century productions. Examining the base for impressed maker marks or handwritten pattern numbers helps narrow down the production era. Stylistic clues like Georgian or Victorian shapes further confirm the historical period.

What caused the pink splash effect?

Potters created the pink splash effect by flicking droplets of metallic solution onto the wet white glaze before firing. During the kiln process, these spots reduced to form distinct rings of shimmering pink and purple. This technique appeared frequently on Sunderland jugs and bowls produced during the nineteenth century. Each application resulted in a completely unique pattern across every vessel.
