How do I adjust the height on these lamps?

Many period pieces utilise a telescopic mechanism with a thumb screw or clutch collar on the central brass stem. Loosening this fastener allows the upper section to slide upward or downward before securing it at the desired elevation.

Were these always fitted for electricity?

Earlier examples, particularly Victorian models, frequently began life as oil lamps or gas standards before undergoing conversion. Subsequent rewiring allows these historic metal and wooden frames to accept modern electrical bulbs and UK plugs safely.

How do I identify an Arts and Crafts floor lamp?

Arts and Crafts pieces emphasise honest construction, visible hand-hammered textures, and straightforward geometric forms rather than excessive ornamentation. They often feature practical tripod bases and adjustable arms intended for reading and task illumination.

What is the difference between brass and giltwood standards?

Brass models rely on cast or tubular metal to create slender, reflective columns with classical capitals and weighted bases. Giltwood versions consist of carved timber covered in gold leaf, offering sculptural relief and ornate decorative motifs from French and Italian design traditions.
