A french commode is a traditional chest of drawers designed for domestic storage, distinguished by continental styling and often finished with a marble top. These pieces typically feature multiple drawers and elaborate veneer work, serving both a functional and decorative purpose in bedrooms or living areas.

How do I date a walnut chest?

Dating relies on observing construction methods, hardware styles, and the specific decorative motifs characteristic of periods like the Louis Philippe or eighteenth century. Changes in drawer dovetailing, veneer thickness, and the profile of the marble top provide reliable clues to the decade of manufacture.

Where should I place a bedside cabinet?

Bedside cabinets fit naturally beside a bed to hold lighting, books, and small nighttime essentials within arm's reach. Their marble tops and enclosed storage compartments also make them versatile as small lamp tables in hallways or sitting rooms.

What is the difference between marquetry and parquetry?

Marquetry involves arranging varied wood veneers to create pictorial or floral designs across the surface of a chest. Parquetry uses geometric patterns, such as cubes or chevrons, constructed from small tiles of wood.
