How do I wire an old lamp?

Vintage floor standing lamps often require rewiring to meet modern electrical safety standards. A qualified electrician can replace aged internal flex while preserving the original brass or wooden structure. Most standards allow the new cord to run internally through the central shaft, keeping the exterior appearance entirely authentic.

Are these lamps height adjustable?

Many examples across the Victorian and Edwardian periods incorporate sliding brass columns with thumbscrews. This mechanism originally allowed users to raise or lower the oil reservoir or light source. Buyers should check individual listings to confirm whether a specific standard lamp retains its functional sliding adjustment.

What is a torchere lamp?

A torchere is a tall, slender floor-standing light fixture designed to direct illumination upward toward the ceiling. They often feature decorative figures, pedestals, or classical columns. In period interiors, these served as architectural accent pieces rather than direct task lighting.

How do I choose the right shade?

Selecting a shade depends on the proportions of the standard and the era of the piece. Art Deco lamps pair well with geometric vellum or silk shades, while Chinoiserie standards suit decorated fabric. Proportion is key, ensuring the diameter of the shade complements the height and weight of the base.
