How do I install vintage exterior lighting?

Most period outdoor fixtures require modern wiring updates to meet current electrical standards safely. A qualified electrician should handle the mounting and connection to your exterior power supply. Ensure the wall brackets or mounting posts are securely anchored into exterior masonry or timber to support the considerable weight of cast iron and copper lanterns.

Were these lights originally gas?

Many Victorian and Edwardian exterior lanterns began as gas-fuelled street or porch lights before conversion to electricity. This history often accounts for internal burner remnants or ventilation chimneys at the top. Converted fixtures retain their original metalwork integrity while accommodating modern bulb fittings for daily garden use.

How do I clean verdigris copper?

The green verdigris patina on copper and brass represents decades of natural weathering and is generally preserved by collectors. Aggressive cleaning removes this protective layer and the historical character of the piece. Light washing with mild soapy water and a soft brush removes surface dirt without disturbing the underlying metal finish.

Are these lights weatherproof?

Constructed from durable metals like copper, bronze, and cast iron, these fixtures were engineered to endure harsh outdoor elements. Glass panels protect the interior bulb compartments from rain and wind. Routine inspection of seals and glass seating helps maintain their weather resistance in exposed garden locations.
