What are vintage crystal lustres?

Vintage crystal lustres are decorative glass objects and lighting fixtures featuring hanging cut glass pendants. They were produced during the Victorian and Edwardian periods as ornamental mantel pieces or functional candle holders. Buyers find them in various forms, including paired table ornaments, wall lights, and large multi-armed chandeliers. Their primary function involves catching and refracting ambient light.

How were mantel lustres used?

Mantel lustres served as decorative centrepieces on living room fireplaces, paired with candles or simply displayed for their visual appeal. Their reflective glass drops enhanced the dim lighting of nineteenth-century rooms. They also appeared on sideboards and console tables within Victorian and Edwardian homes. Some examples included storm shades to protect candle flames from air currents.

How do I clean crystal lustres?

Cleaning crystal lustres involves removing the hanging glass pendants individually to wash them in warm soapy water. This method prevents moisture from damaging old metal frames and wiring. Metal components require gentle dusting with a soft cloth rather than abrasive chemical cleaners. Careful handling ensures the delicate wire loops holding the glass drops remain intact.

How do I tell Victorian lustres apart from later pieces?

Victorian lustres often feature deep ruby, green, or cased glass bodies paired with heavy hand-cut crystal pendants. The casting on the brass or gilt metal bases tends to show weight and traditional joinery methods. Later Edwardian and early twentieth-century variations frequently adopt lighter French styles with gilt metal mounts and simpler glass drops. Examining the wear on the base and the cut of the glass helps indicate the production period.
