How do postal scales work?

These scales operate on a balance beam principle where letters are placed on one platform while calibrated brass weights sit on the other. The pivot point indicates when the weight matches the postal tariff. Most antique examples retain their original swing arms and level indicators to ensure accurate readings.

Are the weights usually included?

Many sets include their original graduated brass weights, often stored in dedicated slots within the wooden base. Complete matching sets add considerably to the integrity of the piece. When weights are missing, finding exact period replacements of the same manufacturer can prove challenging.

Where were letter boxes used?

Letter boxes served large domestic residences, country houses, and hotels for collecting outgoing mail before collection by postal workers. Hotel and bankers' versions often included glass panels or specific slot designations. They sat on heavy mahogany or oak desks or mounted directly onto entrance hall walls.

How do I date an Edwardian scale?

Edwardian postal pieces typically date between nineteen hundred and nineteen ten, showing cleaner lines than heavier Victorian designs. Maker stamps and registration numbers stamped into the brass or wood provide the most reliable dating evidence. Stylistic shifts from ornate Victorian casting to simpler Edwardian forms help separate the eras.
