How were these stands used?

These pieces served in bedrooms and dressing rooms to hold and air linens before the widespread installation of central heating and fitted bathrooms. Today, they function practically in modern bathrooms to hang towels while adding period warmth to the interior.

Can I use them in a modern bathroom?

Freestanding towel rails adapt easily to modern spaces because they require no wall mounting or permanent installation. Due to the natural sensitivity of historic wood to moisture, adequate room ventilation helps protect the timber from long-term damp damage.

How do I identify an Edwardian towel rail?

Edwardian pieces often feature lighter mahogany frames, sometimes accented with subtle satinwood inlay or simpler turned uprights. They reflect the domestic styles of the early twentieth century, which favoured lighter woods and cleaner lines than preceding Victorian designs.

What is a folding towel rail?

A folding towel rail consists of multiple hinged wooden frames that can be angled for stability or folded flat when not in use. This movable design made it easy to shift the stand near a fire or sunlight for drying laundry.
