How were monks benches used?

These pieces served primarily as hallway seating where occupants could remove footwear while storing outdoor garments or household items within the integrated box base. Some specific variants featured tabletops that pivoted or folded downward to create an impromptu surface for writing or dining in smaller rooms.

What woods were used?

Oak is the predominant timber found across these listings, valued for its strength and suitability for deep relief carving. Pine appears frequently in painted regional pieces, while occasional examples utilise mahogany, elm, or mixed secondary woods.

How do I date a piece?

Dating relies on examining the timber preparation, tool marks left on hidden surfaces, and the style of the hardware used for hinges and fixings. Revival pieces often blend nineteenth-century construction methods with motifs borrowed from the seventeenth century, making decorative details a key indicator.

Where should I place one?

Their narrow profile makes them well suited for entrance halls, corridors, and large reception spaces where they provide both seating and storage. They also function effectively against blank walls in living areas, allowing the carved back panels to act as a visual focal point.
