This antique Jacobean Revival monks bench dates from 1880 and operates as a dual-purpose hall seat with a pivoting tilt top that converts the backrest into a table, alongside a lift-up seat that reveals a storage coffer base. Solid oak timber with a warm brown finish constitutes the construction, accented by deep relief carvings comprising acanthus scrollwork and a central cartouche on the backrest, floral panels on the front and side coffers, and intricate guilloche mouldings along the base rails. Prominent lion armrests project forward on either side, while turned wooden roundels secure the pivoting backrest mechanism, and short block feet support the entire structure. The piece measures 98 cm high, 108 cm wide, and 49 cm deep. Placement in a hallway, entryway, or living space provides practical seating and concealed storage, with the conversion capability allowing the bench to function as a side table when required in everyday domestic settings.

FAQs

A monks bench, also known as a settle table, is a dual-purpose piece of historic furniture featuring a seat with built-in storage beneath and a pivoting backrest that tilts forward to function as a tabletop.

Monks benches were traditionally constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak or walnut, using mortise and tenon joinery, hand-carved decorative panels, and wooden tilt pins or hinges to support the swinging mechanism.

Authentic examples display hand-cut joinery, natural timber shrinkage along panel seams, variations in hand-carved relief details, and patinated timber consistent with historic wear around the armrests and base.

A carved oak monks bench functions effectively as a focal piece in an entrance hall, providing hidden storage while pairing balanced texture against neutral plaster walls, modern brass lighting, or contemporary artwork.

Maintain the timber finish by dusting regularly with a soft cloth, applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year along the grain, and keeping the piece away from direct heat sources.
