How do I clean mahogany?

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, dry cloth to prevent grit accumulation on the polished wood. Apply traditional beeswax periodically to nourish the timber and maintain the natural lustre without sealing the grain under heavy synthetics. Avoid placing wooden furniture near direct heat sources or strong sunlight, which can dry out the mahogany and cause splitting in older veneers. Lift rather than drag chests when moving them to protect the feet and structural joints.

What is a campaign chest?

A campaign chest is a piece of furniture built in two or more stackable sections for easy transport by military officers on active service. Recessed brass handles and corner braces prevent snagging during travel. These pieces use durable timbers like mahogany and often feature integrated writing slopes or leather tops. The modular construction allows officers to pack and move their belongings efficiently.

How do I spot a veneer?

Look closely at the grain patterns on flat surfaces to identify thin sheets of decorative wood applied over a secondary timber carcase. Flame mahogany veneer displays mirrored or repeating flame figures that differ from solid plank construction. Inspect the edges and corners where the veneer meets the solid wood frame to check for lifting or historical repairs. High-quality veneered pieces maintain tight, seamless joints around all drawer fronts and tops.
